RE: Your April 29 report on Transylvania
Dear Mr. Linnebank,
I am writing about your April 29 report from Romania (attached below). The reason I write is because this report contains several errors and in general it does not live up to the high standards of accuracy and inpartiality, which one would expect from Reuters.
Your report in part says: \"...Transylvania to Hungary, which ruled the land from 1867 to 1918..\"
The fact is that Transylvania was part of the Hungarian Kingdom for most of it's over one thousnad years of turbulent existence. In contrast, your reference to 1867 implies that Romania existed in 1867, which it did not. It was at the Congress of Berlin in 1878 that Romania became a state and it was in 1881 that Romania was proclaimed a kingdom. This new kingdom consisted of Moldavia and Walachia, but did not include Transylvania.
Later you write: \"Hungarians and Romanians each claim Transylvania as the cradle of their civilisation, and three people were killed and scores were injured in ethnic clashes in the Transylvanian town of Tirgu Mures in 1991.\"
This too is in error. The clashes in Tirgu Mures occured not in 1991, but in 1990 and were insignificant, compared to the 1989 ones, which both Hungarians and Romanians participated in and ended the Ceaucescu dictatorship.
If you read your report below, you will I am sure agree, that its text is misleading and requires the prompt issuing of a correction. In addition to correcting this one report I would like to suggest that in general you do more research before you write about the history of Central Europe.
