Dear President Bush, Dear Senator Kerry,
I am writing to you as a member of the Hungarian Lobby of the United States. Our lobby has not yet endorsed any presidential candidate and your response to this letter will help us in making that decision.
As you probably know, there are some 1.5 million Hungarian-Americans in the United States. They tend to be conservative and they reside mostly in the Northeast, Ohio and Florida.
What you probably do not know is that Hungarians are the largest minority of Europeand and that the Hungarian-Americans are more than willing to cross party lines, if that helps their relatives in Europe. Hungarians became a minority, not because they emigrated to other countries, but because the borders been redrawn around them. They became foreigners without leaving their thousand years old towns and villages.
The kingdom of Hungary was dismembered in 1920 (against the objections of President Wilson), because having a large and powerful Central European nation would have prevented Western Europe's hegemony over the whole of Europe. Hungary did nothing to deserve this. Hungarians defended Europe for a thousand years, they never had any colonies, never had any slaves, did not practice segregation, were the first nation to declare the freedom of religion and more recently, in 1956, they served all of mankind by mortally wounding Communism.
We, American-Hungarians would like to learn, if your foreign policy would include the protection of the collective human rights of the national minorities, their right to local self-government and to dual citizenship?
I would be very grateful if you could advise me about your position on these issues.

I am an undecided Hungarian-American voter living in Fairfield County. I would like to ask you to answer this letter to help me (and also some of my friends) to decide whom to vote for in November.
You might not know that Hungarians are the largest minority of Europe and that some Hungarian-Americans, such as myself are more than willing to cross party lines, if that is what it takes to help their relatives in Europe.

Tisztelt Köztársasági Elnök Úr!
Tisztelettel kérem, hogy a jelenlegi kormányválság megoldására, a kormány élére jelöljön egy köztiszteletben álló, lehetöleg párton kivüli személyt, s ha ezt a jelölést az országgyülés 40 napon belül nem fogadja el, úgy rendeljen el új választásokat.
Azért látom ezt szükségesnek, mert az előző választáson a magyar nép az MSZP-SZDSZ koaliciójára és annak jelöltjére Medgyessy Péterre szavazott, de arra nem, hogy az új miniszterelnököt egy párt kongresszusa jelölje ki. Egy párt jelöltjét miniszterelnökké kinevezni még akkor sem helyes, ha a párt, -a korrupt posztkommunisták helyére,- most talán egy 15 millióban gondolkozó és Kéthly Anna példáját tisztelő új vezetőt javasolna.
Ugyanakkor az sem lenne helyes, ha Elnök Úr az ellenzék egyik vezetőjét kérné fel kormány alakitására, mert az ellenzék nem rendelkezik a kormányzáshoz és a stabilitás visszaállitásához szükséges parlamenti többséggel.
A fenti okokból, tisztelettel kérem Elnök Urat, ne engedje, hogy még két évet elvesztegessünk a valódi magyar kibontakozásra várva. Használja ki az alkotmány biztositotta lehetőségeket az össznemzeti önrendelkezés és lelki-jellembeli megtisztulás ügyének szolgálatában. Ne engedje se azt, hogy egy párt kongresszusa dönthessen a nemzet helyett, se azt, hogy olyan személy juthasson hatalomra, hogy aki a magyar szavazók által még csak meg sem mérettetett.

Attacks Against the Hungarian Minority in Serbia Are Increasing

SUBOTICA, Serbia, Sept. 15 - When the Setets family set off this morning to take their 13-year-old daughter to school, they got a shock. As they left their small, two-room house on the outskirts of Subotica, in northern Serbia, they found a 15-inch kitchen knife imbedded in their front door. Alongside it, someone had sprayed the Serbian word for "death" in red. Further to the right was "Drop dead, Hungarians."
Such ethnically motivated attacks by Serbs against people like the Setets (pronounced sheh-tets), members of this country's 300,000-strong Hungarian minority, have become rife, souring relations between Serbia and neighboring Hungary. The Hungarian government has urged Serbia to do more to protect the Hungarians, most of whom live in Vojvodina Province
The discovery of the graffiti at the Setets house came just 12 hours before a visit by President Ferenc Madl of Hungary to Subotica as part of a state visit to Serbia and Montenegro.
Local Hungarian politicians say that incidents like the desecration of graveyards, assaults and racist graffiti, have increased in the last six months. The Setets's 19-year-old son, Denis, was beaten up by Serbs last month as he cycled home from a nightclub.
Hungary's foreign minister, Laszlo Kovacs, last week described such attacks as "atrocities" but toned down his language on Monday after a meeting of European foreign ministers in Brussels. He also said he did not believe that the Serbian government was behind the attacks.
Serbia has until now played down the incidents in Vojvodina. A report last week by the Serbian Interior Ministry on 67 incidents of violence this year concluded that none were ethnically motivated. But President Boris Tadic called for a full police investigation of the tensions in Vojvodina after meeting President Madl on Tuesday in Belgrade.
Hungarian politicians here acknowledge that the incidents in Vojvodina pale into significance when compared the ethnic violence that tore Yugoslavia apart, leaving at least 300,000 people dead. They also stress that Hungarians managed to co-exist with Serbs throughout the Balkans wars of the 1990's.
But they also fear that unless the government takes the current tensions more seriously, the violence could quickly increase.
"You have to bear in mind, this is how the war in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo began," said Jozsef Kasza, leader of the Vojvodina Alliance of Hungarians, the main ethnic Hungarian party in Serbia. He has called on Serbia to increase the number of ethnic Hungarians in the police.
Serbia's deputy minister for minority rights, Jelena Markovic, accused Hungarian politicians, including Mr. Kasza, of exaggerating the problem to gain more votes when Serbia holds municipal elections this Sunday.
"The Hungarians are using these incidents for political gain," she said in a telephone interview.
She added that Mr. Kasza's party appeared to have adopted its stance after failing to gain any parliamentary seats in elections last December.
One former government adviser said that although the issue may be linked the elections on Sunday, Serbia would gain by being seen to take the issue seriously. "It's time to show that the Republic of Serbia is responding in a different way to Milosevic's Serbia,'' said the adviser, Pedrag Simic, now a professor of political science in Belgrade, referring to Slobodan Milosevic, who is being tried on war-crime charges by a tribunal in The Hague.

Thanks for your fine article and for trying to help the Hungarians of Voivodina.
As I am sure you know, the Albanians and the Hungarians are the largest minorities of Europe. While the free nations of the world went to war to protect the Albanians, little has been done to guarantee the rights of the Hungarian minorities. Thanks for your fine article today in the Times and for trying to help the Hungarians of Voivodina.

It is high time to protect the Hungarians of Voivodina by guaranteeing the collective human rights of this national minority. Even under Communist Yugoslavia, Voivodina had her autonomy, it is high time to guarantee the right of the Hungarians of Voivodina to local self-government and dual citizenship.

Megindult New Yorkban a magyar iskola, cserkészet, viszem mindkettőre a két picit, de van egy gondom: Szeretném, ha este az angol TV helyett magyar meséket nézhetnének a TV-n, de a new yorki magyar könyvesboltban csak magyar rendszerü VCR kapható, amerikai rendszerü nincs. Megkérdezné Béla bácsi az HL-es fiatalokat, hogy ők hol rendelik az amerikai rendszerü magyar mese-VCR-okat?
