Dear President Bush, Dear Senator Kerry,
I am writing to you as a member of the Hungarian Lobby of the United States. Our lobby has not yet endorsed any presidential candidate and your response to this letter will help us in making that decision.
As you probably know, there are some 1.5 million Hungarian-Americans in the United States. They tend to be conservative and they reside mostly in the Northeast, Ohio and Florida.
What you probably do not know is that Hungarians are the largest minority of Europeand and that the Hungarian-Americans are more than willing to cross party lines, if that helps their relatives in Europe. Hungarians became a minority, not because they emigrated to other countries, but because the borders been redrawn around them. They became foreigners without leaving their thousand years old towns and villages.
The kingdom of Hungary was dismembered in 1920 (against the objections of President Wilson), because having a large and powerful Central European nation would have prevented Western Europe's hegemony over the whole of Europe. Hungary did nothing to deserve this. Hungarians defended Europe for a thousand years, they never had any colonies, never had any slaves, did not practice segregation, were the first nation to declare the freedom of religion and more recently, in 1956, they served all of mankind by mortally wounding Communism.
We, American-Hungarians would like to learn, if your foreign policy would include the protection of the collective human rights of the national minorities, their right to local self-government and to dual citizenship?
I would be very grateful if you could advise me about your position on these issues.

I do know that Hungary has been a solid ally of the U.S. efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as the war on terror. However, for the most part, the Bush administration has walked away from more than a hundred years of American leadership in the world and embraced a new and dangerously ineffective American disregard for the world. Time and again, this administration has confused leadership with going it alone and engagement with compromise of principle*they fail to understand that real leadership means standing by your principles and rallying others to join you.
As president, John Kerry will rebuild America's leadership in the world through strength and cooperation with its friends and allies. His administration will seek to expand relations between the U.S. and Hungary through greater dialogue and discussion at the highest levels of government as well as from the input and experience of Hungarian-American groups. Hungarian-Americans have contributed so much to make our country great.
John Kerry will work to make certain that the United States and Hungary not only remain allies, but that they become even closer partners on issues of security, trade and investment, and culture.

Tisztelettel kérem, hogy a jelenlegi kormányválság megoldására, a kormány élére jelöljön egy köztiszteletben álló, lehetöleg párton kivüli személyt, s ha ezt a jelölést az országgyülés 40 napon belül nem fogadja el, úgy rendeljen el új választásokat.
Azért látom ezt szükségesnek, mert az előző választáson a magyar nép az MSZP-SZDSZ koaliciójára és annak jelöltjére Medgyessy Péterre szavazott, de arra nem, hogy az új miniszterelnököt egy párt kongresszusa jelölje ki. Egy párt jelöltjét miniszterelnökké kinevezni még akkor sem helyes, ha a párt, -a korrupt posztkommunisták helyére,- most talán egy 15 millióban gondolkozó és Kéthly Anna példáját tisztelő új vezetőt javasolna.
Ugyanakkor az sem lenne helyes, ha Elnök Úr az ellenzék egyik vezetőjét kérné fel kormány alakitására, mert az ellenzék nem rendelkezik a kormányzáshoz és a stabilitás visszaállitásához szükséges parlamenti többséggel.
A fenti okokból, tisztelettel kérem Elnök Urat, ne engedje, hogy még két évet elvesztegessünk a valódi magyar kibontakozásra várva. Használja ki az alkotmány biztositotta lehetőségeket az össznemzeti önrendelkezés és lelki-jellembeli megtisztulás ügyének szolgálatában. Ne engedje se azt, hogy egy párt kongresszusa dönthessen a nemzet helyett, se azt, hogy olyan személy juthasson hatalomra, hogy aki a magyar szavazók által még csak meg sem mérettetett.

Amerikai óriáscég is beszállt a verespataki aranyüzletbe

Kié lesz az arany? Vagy úgy is mondhatnánk: romániai hajsza az arany után. A lényeg: egy amerikai óriáscég is beszállt abba a romániai aranybánya-tervbe, amely óriási ellenkezést váltott ki, nemcsak a helyiek, hanem Románia-, sőt, Magyarország-szerte is.
A verespataki óriáskülszíni-bányát tervező kanadai cég részvényeinek 19 százalékát megvásárolta a világ legnagyobb aranykitermelője, az Egyesült Államokbeli Newmont - értesült a Ziarul Finaciar újság. A tekintélyes bukaresti gazdasági lap szerint az amerikai óriáscég közel 19 millió dollárt adott a részvényekért, s az ügylettel, ha közvetetten is, de beszállt a ciántechnológiás verespataki projektbe, amelyet a Román Tudományos Akadémia, a román ortodox egyház, valamint a romániai és nemzetközi környezetvédők hevesen elleneznek.
A bányatervet egy kanadai-román vegyes vállalat szándékszik megvalósítani, amelynek többségi, 80 százalékos tulajdonosa a Gabriel Resources kanadai cég, s ennek a részvényeiből vásároltak most az amerikaiak. A tranzakció nyomán a májusban még anyagi nehézségekkel küszködő kanadai cég részvényeinek árfolyama 52 százalékkal nőtt.
A román újság egy tengeren túli elemzőt idéz, aki szerint a világ legnagyobb aranykitermelője, az amerikai Newmont cég nem hoz spekulatív döntéseket; Az, hogy részvényeket vásárolt a kanadaiaktól azt jelenti: bízik a verespataki terv megvalósításában. Sőt, az amerikai cég nyilatkozatban közölte: kész technológiai és környezetvédelmi támogatást nyújtani a vállalkozáshoz, amely több mint négymilliárd dollár értékű kitermelt arannyal számol.
A terv kivitelezésének azonban egyelőre két fő akadálya van, egyrészt az, hogy el kell költöztetni a települést, amit még sok verespataki ellenez, másrészt az, hogy nincs környezetvédelmi engedély az óriásbánya megnyitásához.

Journalist Ilona Marton Dies at 92

WASHINGTON - Ilona Marton, a longtime wire service reporter who covered the anti-communist Hungarian revolution, died at 92.
Marton died of heart failure on Saturday at her home in Silver Spring, Md., her daughter, Kati Marton, said.
Marton worked for United Press - predecessor of United Press International - for about 10 years in Budapest.
She was born March 14, 1912, in Miskolc, in northeast Hungary, to parents who later died at Auschwitz. From 1948 until 1955, she and her husband, Endre Marton, a reporter for The Associated Press, covered the major events of the communist takeover, then the repression and trials that followed, Kati Marton said.
"She was very brave and they had just lived through the Nazi occupation, followed by the Soviet occupation," she said. "She really lived through the great cataclysms of the 20th century."
Ilona Marton was imprisoned for a year - and her husband for two - on accusations by the Hungarian communists that they were CIA spies. They were released in time to cover the unfolding tumult of the uprising.
"She and her husband were the sole links to the outside world as the Soviet army crushed the Hungarian freedom fighters," said Richard Holbrooke, former ambassador to the United Nations.
Ilona Marton shared a George Polk Award - representing journalistic integrity, superb reporting and protecting the public - with her husband, for their coverage.
Following the revolution, Marton took risks by helping organize a general strike. Warned that the secret police were going to arrest them again, the Martons, along with their two young daughters, were given refuge in the U.S. Embassy and secretly taken to Austria.
After a few months in Vienna, the Martons were brought to the United States by The Associated Press. The day they arrived in New Jersey, they were taken by police escort to New York to receive their Polk Award.
In 1957, when her husband began covering the State Department for AP in Washington, Ilona Marton started a new career as a high school French teacher in Montgomery County, Md. Besides her native Hungarian, she spoke French, English, German, Greek and Latin; and she had a doctorate in history.
She is survived by her husband, who retired from the AP in 1975; their three children, Julia, Kati and Andrew; and four grandchildren.

Last Piece of Hungary's Tokaji Heritage Up for Sale

TOLCSVA, Hungary (Reuters) - Louis XIV called it the "Wine of Kings, King of Wines." Peter the Great was a fan. Rousseau and Goethe both sang its praises.
Now the last of the great Tokaji wine producers and the largest in Hungary, Tokaj Kereskedohaz, is to be put up for sale, likely to go to one of the millionaires who have sprung up in the country since the fall of communism in 1989.
The firm makes around 1 million liters of wine a year, a far cry from its communist heyday when it produced 30 million liters, mostly for the Soviet market and for Poles, who were great admirers of Tokaj and even named a special kind of Tokaji "szamorodni," in the early 19th century.
Since the collapse of communism, the once-great company in the east of Hungary has been forced to eke out a living on state handouts. It was eventually broken up with many of the best vineyards and cellars sold, mostly to foreigners.
"They bought out the soul of the company, the best cellars and vineyards which made up about 70-80 percent of the company's value," Laszlo Kiss, chief executive of Tokaj Kereskedohaz, told Reuters.
The government will put the rump of the company up for sale later this year. Selling state assets in Hungary has become a hot political issue in a country which has seen many of its prized companies fall into foreign hands.
GREAT VINTAGES
Some things are untouchable. The company's 350,000 bottles of museum wine, some dating back to the 1680s and stored in huge vaulted cellars, will remain in state hands as well as some 44 acres of the best vineyards.
Perhaps the most famous Tokaji wine is Tokaji Aszu, a honey colored dessert wine. Each vintage has its own special quality.
"Aszu can be of various qualities ... and just like in women, there is always a new kind of beauty to discover in an Aszu wine as it matures," said Kiss.
The most recent outstanding harvests were in 1993 and 1999.
As with many things in Hungary, the exact beginnings of Tokaji Aszu are shrouded in myth.
According to legend, a priest named Mate Szepsi Lacko was the first to make Aszu in 1650, when he delayed the harvest fearing an attack by the Turks. Aszu had actually been mentioned in historical documents from the 1500s.
Today there is a great debate about tradition versus innovation in Tokaj, with the "modernizers" -- mostly foreign-backed wine makers -- calling for less oxidation and shorter aging in barrels, and with traditionalists like Tokaj Kereskedohaz favoring long aging in Hungarian oak barrels.
Traditionally, hand-picked Aszu grapes are mixed and fermented with white wine, and then the extracted Azsu wine is aged for a minimum of four years in oak barrels.
But Hungary's 1997 Wine Law now allows an Azsu to be put on the market after only two years of aging.
"If we change the way Aszu had been made for centuries, it will lose its unique character, so I have reservations about the so called new style Aszu wines," Kiss said.
Tokaji wines have not only sealed diplomatic relations and probably love affairs over the centuries, but also triggered a row between Hungary and Slovakia after part of the wine region became Slovak territory after World War One.
Hungary complained Slovakia was using the Tokaji name for wines grown outside the historic region, and inferior drinks were labeled as Tokaji which could destroy its reputation.
The issue was resolved only in June, shortly after the two countries' entry to the European Union.
