To the Editor,
Your depicting the prime minister of Hungary as the devil is not funny. Yours is not a hate filled propaganda article nor is it fair. When an article is approaching demagoguery, it can have dangerous consequences. Just look at the tragedy in Tusan, Arizona and ask if the vitriolic rhetoric and slender in the American media might have not incited this disturbed man to his heinous act? We must all agree that if the media contributes to an atmosphere of hate, it must be restrained by law.
Therefore, when Hungary is presiding over the EU, she has a responsibility to protect not only her own image, but also that of the Union. Therefore, on the one hand she must respect the freedom of the press and pluralism in the media and on the other hand she must protect the public from vitriolic rhetoric, lies, slender and incitements to hate.
Your article implying that Hungary’s media law is an attack on democracy and borders on censorship is false. This law has not even been implemented, its modification is under way and its 170 pages, which define the limits on publishing violent, pornographic and similar material, have not even been read by most of its critics. In fact, Hungary’s press is free to publish paractically anything and is one of the freest in Europe.
Because of these facts, it is probable that the attacks on Hungary’s media law are not motivated by a concern for the freedom of the press, but by ulterior motives. The goal of these attacks could be to reduce the credibility of the new president of the EU, because Mr. Orbán is not as subservient to the interests of big business as were the previous EU presidents. Consequently, the large corporations could consider this new EU president as dangerous because he might make proposals to increase their taxes or to require more transparency from them.
I would also note that your article emphasized that FIDESZ is a party of the right. Yet, by American standards a government that curtails big business is not considered to be right-wing. This is shown by the fact that the Orbán Government is fighting against Hungary’s right-wing political party (the Jobbik) and is standing up for the rights of all national and ethnic minorities throughout Europe, including the rights of the Roma people. Also, if Mr. Orbán held right-wing views, is it likely that Mr. George Soros would have financed his scholarship at Oxford in1991?
Just recently, in a completely free election, the Hungarian people voted by a margin of 3:1 to end the rule of the corrupt „Socialist” (post-Communist) government, the members of which took bribes from the multinational corporations to sell the national property for nothing during „privatization”. It was the democratically expressed will of the people to have a government that will stop such corruption, protect the domestic industry and build a truly democratic and constitutional democracy. One would expect that the democratic western media such as your own would support them instead of printing quotations that called Hungary a Führerstaat.
