
Birthplace of New York State governor (1994-) George Pataki, this WestchesterCounty city (pop. 18000) had been home to a thriving Hungarian-American community in the early 1900's. The governor's grandparents emigrated from Hungary in 1908. Characteristic of theown's regard for its "magyar" community is the plaque (to the left) in the Uriah Hill school. Unveiled on October16 1914, it shows the companion views of Washington and Kossuth. Inscriptions:
"Each in his sphere labored and gave life's work for the liberty and uplift of the people. This tablet is placed in the Uriah Hill Junior School to draw attention of the children for their emulation to the life of Washington and Kossuth by the United Hungarians of Peekskill in grateful appreciation of the splendid facilities given to the children by the people of Peekskill."
